Music & Whitby - An Unlikely Tradition

Whitby's rich cultural heritage, beautiful location and ample supply of holiday accommodation have all helped to make it an unlikely musical centre, playing host to several major music festivals each year.

  • Musicport (although there are plans to relocate to nearby Bridlington)
  • A world music festival
  • Whitby Gospel Music Convention
  • The Festival of 60s Music
  • The Country Music Weekend
  • The VIP Motown Soul Weekend

All of these musical events take place within the town and the quality of the artists is often world-class.

Hopefully, this has given you a new insight into Whitby and what it has to offer. You know about the history of the town, Captain Cook and the Dracula connection, but its music roots are also a feast for the music connoisseur.

Other notable musical events include:

These include the biannual Whitby Gothic Weekends which take place in April and at Halloween. Most performances take place in the Whitby Pavilion, and a selection of the best goth bands around turn up to perform twice a year - as do a huge number of dedicated goths from the UK and abroad.

It's at these times of the year that Whitby really comes alive. In fact, the town is so full of Victorian-dressed characters of all ages, together with the ubiquitous Goths, that it almost feels as if you've walked onto the set of a movie!

Another very popular event is the annual Whitby Folk Week, which usually happens in August. Folk Week attracts as many as 600 hundred performers each year, and throughout the week almost every venue in town is in use - from small pubs to the 1000-person capacity Whitby Pavilion.

Violin Wall Chart by Martin Norgaard

This wonderful Violin Wall Chart by Martin Norgaard will inspire and motivate students and teachers alike! It comes rolled and is published my Mel Bay Publications.

Like Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder, blindness didn't stop Louis Braille from making music. He played the organ and invented a method of reading and writing for the blind. The accordion was popular with writers Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy.

Bernie Williams is not the only Major League Baseball player to play an instrument. Pitcher John Smoltz, Cy Young Award winner, plays the accordion. Football player, Trevor Pryce, plays for the Denver Broncos and plays the drums. Two musical basketball players are Oscar Robertson, who plays the flute, and Wayman Tisdale, who plays bass guitar and has made an album.

Astronaut Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon and he plays the baritone horn. Two physicists who won the Nobel Prize, Albert Einstein and Donald Glaser, played violin. Einstein also played the piano. Scientists Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell each played the piano when not working on their many inventions.

Bernie Williams, a former Major League Baseball player for the New York Yankees, not only can hit home runs, but he also plays the guitar and composes his own songs. He's even made an album! There are many famous people, athletes, scientists, writers, and educators who are also musicians.

It's no surprise that playing an instrument has been scientifically linked to improved test scores, discipline, and study habits. Music is especially linked to math, specifically to patterns, fractions, and graphing. Improved test scores and study habits lead to success in school. School success leads to opportunities.

Learning an instrument can be embarked upon at any age. There are schools and music teachers who offer lessons for children and adults of any age. There are 'self-teaching' keyboards and guitars which give basic instruction at an individual pace. There are several beginning instruments for young children that give them the opportunity to explore music for fun. Who knows, today, young budding musician, tomorrow, future Nobel Prize winner!

Currently, The Used is composed of Bert McCracken (lead vocals and piano), Quinn Allman (guitar and backup vocals), Jeph Howard (bass and backup vocals), and Dan Whitesides (drums). In the past, the group also worked with other musicians, such as Greg Bester, who served as touring guitarist during the early 2000s. Most notably, Branden Steineckert, who provided backup vocals and played drums, was kicked out of the band during the summer of 2006.

The Used released their first full-length studio album, which was self-titled, in 2002. The public readily accepted the new group, and they enjoyed a wealth of early success. Four singles ("A Box Full of Sharp Objects," "Buried Myself Alive," "Blue and Yellow," and "The Taste of Ink") helped claim a following. The album soon went platinum.

Discography & Musical Achievements

The future of The Used involves another CD and DVD compilation and a couple of tour dates. A new album is set for a 2007 release, and the group is adjusting to their new drummer, Dan Whitesides.

The Used - A Band Fused From Diverse Talents

During the mid-1990s, The Used was known in their early days as a local band called Froglick. At this time, Brenden Steineckert (founding member and drummer) was grouped with Quinn Allman (guitarist) and Jeph Howard (bassist). It was soon agreed that a full-time singer or frontman would be needed to boost the popularity of the band. Auditions were held, but a suitable member could not be found. Upon the suggestion of Allman, a friend from school (Bert McCracken) was asked to join and gladly accepted.

Brief Group History

Hailing from Orem, Utah, the alternative rock band called The Used has made its mark on the public with a couple of albums and music videos released under Reprise Records. With songs like "A Box Full of Sharp Objects" and "The Bird and the Worm," the band has established itself as a thriving music group. With an active following since 2001 (and still going strong), The Used possess a history of making music that begins in the middle of the '90s.

In 2004, the group released "In Love and Death," which also became platinum-certified, selling more than three million copies. The David Bowie remake of "Under Pressure" featured My Chemical Romance and was offered as a bonus track on the 2005 re-release of the album. Additional songs on the album included "Take It Away" and "I Caught Fire." Set for a 2007 release, The Used is planning on sharing "Lies for the Liars," which is also set to come with a DVD.

Current Members

The group began to record a few demos and hold a handful of local shows. John Feldmann, a member of the punk group, Goldfinger, heard the band and, in 2001, encouraged Reprise Records to sign the group. Within a couple of months, a ten-track demo CD was produced. The band would later become The Used after finding out that a band in Boston already went by the moniker Used.

Most students are baffled as to how a piece of music is constructed. It's as if learning how to compose is something only gifted individuals do. And while the intuitive sense behind creating melody itself can not be taught, the craft can!

Form is to music what flower arranging is to the florist. You see, it's all about creating a structure. In flower arranging, the goal is to create something pleasing to the eye. This is accomplished by how the florist places the flowers. He's not going to stack them all to one side. No. He wants to create something that allows the eye to go back and forth. Something that the viewer can take as a complete experience. Music is much the same way.

As I sit here writing this listening to Mozart, I can't help but think of musical form. That sometimes but often not discernible quality to music that makes it art. And when I say art, I'm not talking about improvisation or free form. I'm talking about composition.

To Learn How to Compose Learn How to Improvise

If we played the same thing over and over we get monotony. If we vary the music too much we get incoherence. The solution? Go back and forth between sections! Now this is easy to grasp intellectually. The difficulty comes when students attempt to create their first composition and end up with something less than satisfactory. And this is because most students haven't learned to trust their intuition.
