Customer Review: Martin Guitar Strings
The Martin strings arrived in a timely manner in great condition and I saved money. Can't beat that.
Customer Review: Great Strings for the price
If you looking for rich bronze sound of your steel string, but on the tight budget this could be a great option for you. strings sound great even on cheap chinesse guitars, so make them bearable. Wouldn't recommend putting them on classic 12 fret guitars, cause they definitely have steel sound to them

Largest Concert Venues to Listen to Your Favorite Groups

Lincoln Center in the Amsterdam district for Performing Arts consists of 3 buildings located just about the square: New York State Theater built in 1964 is the site for the NYC Ballet, Avery Fisher Hall (built in 1962) hosts the concerts of NY Philharmonic Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera built in 1966. Other concert halls in New York City are New York City Center, Carnegie Hall and Brooklyn Academy of Music.

The largest concert venues in New York to listen to your favorite groups include: Madison Square Garden, Roseland Ballroom and the Radio City Music Hall.

Radio City Music Hall: The Radio City Music Hall, located in the Rockefeller Center in the New York City is an important entertainment center. It has been nicknamed as the Showplace of the Nation and was among the favorite tourist destinations. Radio City has the capacity of seating 5,933 spectators and was the World's largest movie theater at its time of opening. The interior of Radio City Music Hall was declared landmark in the year 1978.

Roseland Ballroom: Roseland Ballroom or the Roseland Dance City, located at New York City in the West 52nd Street of the theater district. It is a music venue/dance hall /catering hall with a multicolored ballroom pedigree in a transformed ice skating ring. The venue can accommodate around 32,000 standing and about 2,500 for the dance party with about 1,500 to 1,800 in the theater style and 800 to 1000 for the sit down dinner. The first Madison Square opened in the year 1979 at the north eastern part of the Madison Avenue and the 26th street. This is the place where many fights of the legendary boxer Jack Dempsey were held. The 2nd Madison Square Garden replaced the first in 1889. It was designed by the famous Stanford White. The building features a theater, concert hall, and a roof garden. The building was demolished in 1925 and the Madison Square Garden was relocated to 8th Avenue and the 49th Streets in the New York. Presently, the Madison Square Garden is situated at the Penn Station.

New York is the theater center of the United States. The Americans have a very rich culture with the music and theaters being an integral part of it. Only in West 40 & 50 streets and Broadway, there are around 38 theaters opened in winter and autumn. In mid eighties, there were more than 200 theaters in the New York apart from Broadway which were generally located in Chelsea and Greenwich Village. New York also has more than 400 cinemas, from the very well known Radio City music concert hall to the local cinemas where small halls run elite movies. New York entertainment industry is just unimaginable without its cafes, bars, discos and nightclubs.

While buying outdoor speakers, you should keep certain things in mind that will help to enhance the musical experience of outdoor speakers. The weather resistant outdoor speakers are a good option if you want them to be installed in the yard. This will ensure that the speakers will not seize up at the first sprinkling of water.

They comprise a plurality of advantageously located speakers connected by speaker wire to a stereo system. Typically, the speaker wire runs under the roof space of the house or other structure or is buried in the ground in such a manner that each outdoor speaker is connected to the speaker output of the stereo system.

All About Outdoor Speakers

Outdoor speakers are those speakers that are portable and can be placed outside our home. Actually these speakers help to carry our musical interest outdoor without literally moving any music player with us. We can enjoy our favorite music sitting at the back of our terrace while spending time with friends and family. These speakers are good for outdoor projecs.

After one has considered the features, testing the speakers is a crucial step. The best way to test the outdoor audio speakers is to listen to them outside, since sound is distributed differently outside. It is advisable to carry a CD so that you can check the speaker while buying it. Comparing prices in various stores can give you an opportunity to buy the best quality of speakers at the lowest rate.

Currently there are various types of garden speakers that are quite popular. One can also find various kinds of such speakers that look like rock, teddy bear, mushroom, frog, etc. Let us get some details about these unique kinds of speakers. The rock-looking speakers are used in the gardens and look great with the color of natural brown rock. The frog and teddy bear speakers not only add spark to the music, but also provide a romantic atmosphere to the garden, as if it were the birthday party of the children.

Let us go through some of the recommendations while wiring the speakers. The speaker wire should be run through the walls and not through a window or doors because there is the possibility of creasing the cable and a risk of short circuit. The speaker cable should be brought through the exterior wall close to each speaker location. It is always better to use less wire outside the house. Always make sure that the hole from where the speaker wire exits is sealed both for the insulation and as an insect barrier.

If you want it on the ground or out of ground installation then you must decide on which position you want to set the speakers. Some speakers are intended to be set in ground and they are mounted either on the stakes, or just atop the soil or plants. For speakers meant for deck, porch or patio mounting stands should be considered.

Battle of the bands competitions and side stages at major music festivals have also proved to be effective marketing tools for the promotion of a bands music. It may take a lot of time and effort, but a relentless touring schedule may be the only avenue left for an indie band to make their mark.

Effective Indie Promotion

It used to be that independent musical artists could start with their local scene and create an in to bigger fame that way, a sort of osmosis effect. However, the modern era has seen a huge rise in conglomeration, where most radio stations, even those touted as local, are in fact owned and their programming controlled by corporations. Like the big labels, these media giants have business, and not necessarily quality, governing the bottom line.

Without being able to count on a lot of local support in the form of airplay, independent artists are now forced to rely on the other tool to get their message out: touring. Again, the life of an indie group in this area is made more difficult due to the lack of support. Venues need to be sought out and sealed by the band or individual themselves, and events are hard-won.

One of the hardest things about choosing the independent route for any artist is how to get your product out to the masses. Rejecting the road the big labels have paved (and blocked!) means that you retain control over your product, but it also means that all of the advertising techniques used by the big guys to flood the market with the latest hit are not available.

S.o.s. Guitar Tuner

The revolutionary Planet Waves S.O.S. Guitar Tuner pulses two out-of-phase LED light beams directly onto the vibrating string. When the string is out of tune the two lights will visually dance on the string being tuned. As you approach in-tune status the movement slows down and eventually stops when you are perfectly in tune. This revolutionary visual tuning system enables precision tuning in silent or noisy environments with the need for audible sound or sensing of any kind. Features: Ergonomic pick-sized design Light Based Tuning Precisely tune in dark or noisy environments
Customer Review: You get what you pay for
S.o.s. Guitar Tuner It certainly is cheap but as a tuner it has some pretty severe limitations. If one or more of the stings on your guitar are in tune, or very close to it, then this gadget can be useful, but there are situations where it's basically completely useless. If a string is way out of tune and there's enough noise around you that you can't hear the string and compare it to others you could spend an hour trying to find the right pitch and never find it, or you could just keep twisting the tuner until the string snaps. Even under optimal conditions, it's much harder and time-consuming to use than most tuners. I can tune much faster and just about as accurately using a pitch pipe. This tuner does have an advantage over many otherwise superior tuners in that you can use it in low light situations, but that hardly excuses its shortcomings. I suggest you spend a little more and get something that works faster and better. For example, the Intellitouch PT1 and PT2 tuners are way better than this thing. I haven't tried the Intelli IMT500 Backlit Clip Style Tuner, but it looks like it matches up well against the Intellitouch models and comes at a more affordable price.
Customer Review: Good for a cheap strobe
This thing works great for a cheap strobe tuner. It works approximately like any other strobe tuner, and takes some getting used to; but I really like it. The needle in my chromatic tuner (a needle drawn on an LCD) wobbles a lot and when it's "close" the display stays stable; with this I can fine-tune a bit. I really find this thing useful with relative tuning; once I get the low E string in tune, I can use the strobe to check the A string and also visually and audibly compare it to low E at fret 5. I can use it on its own or use a chromatic tuner like the Korg GA-40 to give me a second type of visual reference. If you need to do non-standard tuning, you'll have to use the strobe against a fretted string; for Drop D tuning, for example, you'll need to fret the low E at 2 and use E6 for comparison. If you want to tune up, i.e. have low E play an F, you'll have to fret it up to D5 (fret 4 in this case). Make sure your intonation's proper if you do this.

Information About The Theremin

If you want to start learning how to play the Theremin, you must be ready to dedicate time to master the tricky hand and finger manipulations. Of course, it's fun to discover all the sounds the Theremin is capable of making! You can use your skills with the Theremin in any walk of music - from recording to live orchestras there is an overwhelming need for gifted Theremin players!

The modern Theremin is set up as such: There are two antennas, the right and left. The right antenna, which is vertical and looks like a rod, converts the players right hand into varying pitches. The left antenna, which is horizontal and hoop-like, lets the players left hand control the volume. For left handed people, the Theremin is reversed.

Theremins are still popular instruments today, for their potential is seemingly endless. Theremins can create great special effects, but they can also be used to perform avant-garde and progressive music.

Visually speaking, the Theremin is fun because the sound is produced from moving hands in "thin air". The Theremin is never touched. Imagine playing air guitar - wouldn't it be awesome if real guitar sounds occurred while air-guitaring? The Theremin actually DOES create sound when playing in air, and its sci-fi, futuristic appearance only adds to the appeal.

The Theremin is actually a complicated instrument to play. Like all musical instruments, dedication, practice, and commitment are required ingredients to play a Theremin successfully. While there aren't as many Theremin instructors as say, flute instructors, there is still a decent amount of teachers that can give you professional guidance.

Theremins are amazing instruments that are very underappreciated. Developed in the early 20th century, Leon Theremin (a Russian who moved to America) discovered that by arranging antennas in a certain way, and by capitalizing on radio frequency via RF machines, sound can be controlled.

Theremins can hardly be discussed without mentioning Clara Rockmore, the legendary Theremist who created many of the techniques to create constant, clear, and varied Theremin sounds. Many of the best Theremin music books were created by her, and they are still available today.

In keeping with the new musical paradigm of letting people sample it before letting them snap it up, there's a way below here for you to take a Runk sample home with you.

I live in a great not-so-little place called Fairfield, CT. Right on the Long Island Sound, its basically as far as you'd ever want to commute to NYC from.

And if you don't have one, then you're about to fill the vacancy.

Simple melodies give way to great lyrics which tear down your disdain for life and wish you had found this guy a lot sooner.

Enjoy!

And I don't know if there's something in the water here that gets the adult contemporary musical muscles flowing, but along with John Mayer, Fairfield also boasts the fact that is it also the home of Bob Runk.

A cross between Jimmy Buffet and Beatles-esque, Runk writes and sings simple tunes that will leave you breathless and wishing the night would just keep on keeping on.

Perfect end of day with the wine flowing music, Runk's harmonies touch deep within and "feel" much deeper than the simplicity they hold on the surface. Like a great meal you continue to enjoy long after the restaurant lights have gone off, Runk will breathe some precious life back into souls that so desperately need it.

Then again, I never knew how moreprecious life could be after I found track #8.

I never, ever thought I'd ever have a title like Find Great Singer Songwriter in my article collection.

If you already have a heart, you'll see it get fuller.

Find a Great Singer Songwriter - Put Them Where They Can't Get Lost Again

In the craziest of all scenarios, I never expected to ever type "find great singer songwriter" into the title of an article. Never even thought about it. I mean, I really never considered being fortunate enough to want to get an article out there about someone who moved my soul with his musical abilities.

My most emphatic suggestion is to head straight on over to track #8. "Have A Heart" will do for you what a team of psychologists cannot.

But then it happened.

Music & Whitby - An Unlikely Tradition

Whitby's rich cultural heritage, beautiful location and ample supply of holiday accommodation have all helped to make it an unlikely musical centre, playing host to several major music festivals each year.

  • Musicport (although there are plans to relocate to nearby Bridlington)
  • A world music festival
  • Whitby Gospel Music Convention
  • The Festival of 60s Music
  • The Country Music Weekend
  • The VIP Motown Soul Weekend

All of these musical events take place within the town and the quality of the artists is often world-class.

Hopefully, this has given you a new insight into Whitby and what it has to offer. You know about the history of the town, Captain Cook and the Dracula connection, but its music roots are also a feast for the music connoisseur.

Other notable musical events include:

These include the biannual Whitby Gothic Weekends which take place in April and at Halloween. Most performances take place in the Whitby Pavilion, and a selection of the best goth bands around turn up to perform twice a year - as do a huge number of dedicated goths from the UK and abroad.

It's at these times of the year that Whitby really comes alive. In fact, the town is so full of Victorian-dressed characters of all ages, together with the ubiquitous Goths, that it almost feels as if you've walked onto the set of a movie!

Another very popular event is the annual Whitby Folk Week, which usually happens in August. Folk Week attracts as many as 600 hundred performers each year, and throughout the week almost every venue in town is in use - from small pubs to the 1000-person capacity Whitby Pavilion.

Violin Wall Chart by Martin Norgaard

This wonderful Violin Wall Chart by Martin Norgaard will inspire and motivate students and teachers alike! It comes rolled and is published my Mel Bay Publications.

Like Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder, blindness didn't stop Louis Braille from making music. He played the organ and invented a method of reading and writing for the blind. The accordion was popular with writers Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy.

Bernie Williams is not the only Major League Baseball player to play an instrument. Pitcher John Smoltz, Cy Young Award winner, plays the accordion. Football player, Trevor Pryce, plays for the Denver Broncos and plays the drums. Two musical basketball players are Oscar Robertson, who plays the flute, and Wayman Tisdale, who plays bass guitar and has made an album.

Astronaut Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon and he plays the baritone horn. Two physicists who won the Nobel Prize, Albert Einstein and Donald Glaser, played violin. Einstein also played the piano. Scientists Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell each played the piano when not working on their many inventions.

Bernie Williams, a former Major League Baseball player for the New York Yankees, not only can hit home runs, but he also plays the guitar and composes his own songs. He's even made an album! There are many famous people, athletes, scientists, writers, and educators who are also musicians.

It's no surprise that playing an instrument has been scientifically linked to improved test scores, discipline, and study habits. Music is especially linked to math, specifically to patterns, fractions, and graphing. Improved test scores and study habits lead to success in school. School success leads to opportunities.

Learning an instrument can be embarked upon at any age. There are schools and music teachers who offer lessons for children and adults of any age. There are 'self-teaching' keyboards and guitars which give basic instruction at an individual pace. There are several beginning instruments for young children that give them the opportunity to explore music for fun. Who knows, today, young budding musician, tomorrow, future Nobel Prize winner!

Currently, The Used is composed of Bert McCracken (lead vocals and piano), Quinn Allman (guitar and backup vocals), Jeph Howard (bass and backup vocals), and Dan Whitesides (drums). In the past, the group also worked with other musicians, such as Greg Bester, who served as touring guitarist during the early 2000s. Most notably, Branden Steineckert, who provided backup vocals and played drums, was kicked out of the band during the summer of 2006.

The Used released their first full-length studio album, which was self-titled, in 2002. The public readily accepted the new group, and they enjoyed a wealth of early success. Four singles ("A Box Full of Sharp Objects," "Buried Myself Alive," "Blue and Yellow," and "The Taste of Ink") helped claim a following. The album soon went platinum.

Discography & Musical Achievements

The future of The Used involves another CD and DVD compilation and a couple of tour dates. A new album is set for a 2007 release, and the group is adjusting to their new drummer, Dan Whitesides.

The Used - A Band Fused From Diverse Talents

During the mid-1990s, The Used was known in their early days as a local band called Froglick. At this time, Brenden Steineckert (founding member and drummer) was grouped with Quinn Allman (guitarist) and Jeph Howard (bassist). It was soon agreed that a full-time singer or frontman would be needed to boost the popularity of the band. Auditions were held, but a suitable member could not be found. Upon the suggestion of Allman, a friend from school (Bert McCracken) was asked to join and gladly accepted.

Brief Group History

Hailing from Orem, Utah, the alternative rock band called The Used has made its mark on the public with a couple of albums and music videos released under Reprise Records. With songs like "A Box Full of Sharp Objects" and "The Bird and the Worm," the band has established itself as a thriving music group. With an active following since 2001 (and still going strong), The Used possess a history of making music that begins in the middle of the '90s.

In 2004, the group released "In Love and Death," which also became platinum-certified, selling more than three million copies. The David Bowie remake of "Under Pressure" featured My Chemical Romance and was offered as a bonus track on the 2005 re-release of the album. Additional songs on the album included "Take It Away" and "I Caught Fire." Set for a 2007 release, The Used is planning on sharing "Lies for the Liars," which is also set to come with a DVD.

Current Members

The group began to record a few demos and hold a handful of local shows. John Feldmann, a member of the punk group, Goldfinger, heard the band and, in 2001, encouraged Reprise Records to sign the group. Within a couple of months, a ten-track demo CD was produced. The band would later become The Used after finding out that a band in Boston already went by the moniker Used.

Most students are baffled as to how a piece of music is constructed. It's as if learning how to compose is something only gifted individuals do. And while the intuitive sense behind creating melody itself can not be taught, the craft can!

Form is to music what flower arranging is to the florist. You see, it's all about creating a structure. In flower arranging, the goal is to create something pleasing to the eye. This is accomplished by how the florist places the flowers. He's not going to stack them all to one side. No. He wants to create something that allows the eye to go back and forth. Something that the viewer can take as a complete experience. Music is much the same way.

As I sit here writing this listening to Mozart, I can't help but think of musical form. That sometimes but often not discernible quality to music that makes it art. And when I say art, I'm not talking about improvisation or free form. I'm talking about composition.

To Learn How to Compose Learn How to Improvise

If we played the same thing over and over we get monotony. If we vary the music too much we get incoherence. The solution? Go back and forth between sections! Now this is easy to grasp intellectually. The difficulty comes when students attempt to create their first composition and end up with something less than satisfactory. And this is because most students haven't learned to trust their intuition.

Do you remember when you started to learn your instrument? I bet you thought it was impossible at first and that you were never going to be able to get it. Well, the same can be said for perfect pitch training. You may think it seems like an impossible task at the beginning, but with the pure pitch method and a little bit determination you will be amazed at how quickly you can see the results of your hard work.

The Pure Pitch Method - Does Perfect Pitch Really Exist?

Can you really learn perfect pitch?

Okay, lets start by by explaining what perfect pitch actually is. Basically - perfect pitch is when the listener has the ability to recognise notes and chords just by ear.

Have you noticed that some guitarists can identify and tune their guitar to E without a tuner and that piano players can almost always identify middle c by ear? Well, that is basically the beginning of perfect pitch. If most musicians can name one note by ear, then learning the other 12 notes isn't going to be to much of a task is it? If you find that you can often pick out chords, identify single notes or work out the intervals between two notes then you're already well on your way to developing perfect pitch! Remember - we all have perfect pitch, but we just need to know how to unlock it. The pure pitch method could be the key to unlocking your musical potential.

Like me, have you always been jealous of musicians who claim they have perfect pitch? Can a product like the pure pitch method really help you achieve perfect pitch? Read on to find out if the pure pitch method can really work for you...

Don't worry - there's no special musical gene that some musicians have and some musicians don't. No musicians are ever born with perfect pitch - instead it's something that's simply developed over time. Some musicians seem to develop the skill themselves naturally, whist others find that the only way to achieve it is by using a course like the pure pitch method.

Perfect pitch explained...

Qwik Tune QT-15 Automatic Guitar and Bass Tuner

Introducing the newest addition to the Qwik Tune line of tuners. The QT-15 automatic guitar and bass tuner is made to tune those severly out of tune guitars. This tuner is fast, accurate and a great value. Batteries included.
Customer Review: Nice little tuner
It may not be the fanciest tuner, but it is very easy to use and works just fine. Very small (bigger than a Zippo though) and lightweight as well.
Customer Review: THIS IS EVERYTHING YOU WILL NEED TO GET BY, AND VERY PORTABLE TOO
Smaller than a Zippo lighter, this machine is extremely handy for the beleaguered and going deaf player of the acoustic guitar such as myself. As much as I resist defying the word of another reviewer, I must say that I very gladly have received this handy tuner today and find it as good or better than many with all the bells and whistles and a much higher price tag. For one thing, you can slip it into your pocket, or hand, or mouth, or hat band, or strap sack (I never use a strap) as easily as a guitar pick (which I also never use) and find it ready to go between tunes. In fact, when it arrived today, it came already charged up and ready to tune. Among several other excellent qualities besides the handy size, one other great thing about this tuner is that it is NOT a hot pink as pictured here on the product page, but a respectable and unobtrusive red. In fact, I almost passed up purchasing this piece only because it looks hot pink in the picture; it is red. It is very red. The great and actually generously sized LCD meter copies the kind of needle VUF (is that the right initials? It's been a generation since they were popular) meter that is very readable even for an old guy with failing eyes like me. In other words, get this tuner. It is affordable; it is durable; it is portable, and I haven't even started to read the fine manual to discover what else it might be. I used to be devoted and faithful only to my now rather bulky Korg GT3 Auto Guitar / Bass Tuner which slipped into inner breast pockets or long jean pockets, but since a move to another hermitage I cannot find it. In any case this Qwik Tune is so much smaller and humbler and gentler and kinder and magic. Never mind the high priced tuners with all the bells and whistles that do everything and make you a tuna sandwich, too. This great, simple tuner does everything you will need to get by on your journey, and does it well.

In this way, the traditional six strings of the guitar are stretched across the body and across the frets up to the neck of the guitar, whereas the harp strings are not pressed against any fret or bridge, and simple stand out to be plucked or strummed in the same kind of manner as a harp is normally played. The exact number of harp strings varies from one model to the next, and the tone and pitch of those strings varies too, as indeed does the very octave. In some cases the harp strings are tuned to an octave above that of the guitar's normal six strings, providing a complimentary and very distinctive sound which can give the impression of two quite separate instruments being played, but complimenting each other and resonating together in a beautifully balanced way.

There are two examples of harp guitars however which are not custom built, and which are available, and whilst not indicative of the majority or range of harp guitar styles available, they do provide an example of how these guitars reflect the nature of two such different instruments. The first case is known as the Pikasso, and has four necks with two separate sound holes. In total the Pikasso has forty two strings. An alternative model is the Oracle Harp Sympitar which only has twenty four strings, although there are a dozen strings which run through the neck and are referred to as sympathetic strings. These instruments are extremely specialised, and to play them is quite a challenging feat.

The guitar is not an easy instrument to learn to play, but through its popularity has generated a large number of teachers and resources to aid learning. The harp is far less popular, mainly through its expense, and so is very much harder to learn. A harp guitar is so very specialised that learning it could well be a life's achievement, and those who can play it well are noted particularly in the musical world.

What Exactly is a Harp Guitar?

There are also some harp guitars which have the harp strings tuned to an octave below that of the guitar's six strings, and this provides an undertone which helps to lift the voice of the guitar above a background of resonance. Because these harp guitars are so rare, it is difficult to be precise about the exact number of harp strings, their incorporation into the body of the guitar and even the octave they are tuned to, since many of the harp guitars in existence have been specially commissioned, and often the player or musician has specifically designed or requested a particular style, in order to compliment their style, music genre, or even the type of performance.

If you have never seen a harp guitar before, you may already be envisaging some instrument in your mind which managed to combine the traditional image of a guitar with the classical, almost fairy tale impression of a harp - but how? In fact, a physical combination of the two traditional shapes and designs of the instruments is almost exactly what a harp guitar is. The harp guitar is certainly rare, but at its heart it is still simply a standard six string instrument, following the design and features of an ordinary six string guitar. However, just above these normal, standard six strings are a number of other strings - harp strings, which are spread between two usually curved parts of the guitar body.

Many people have never even heard of harp guitars, and their appearance on stage or in a music hall is likely to generate interest end curiosity before it has even begun to be played. A harp guitar sounds very much as though it has managed to combine the standard guitar with an instrument normally seen being manhandled onto a stage by a couple of strong men, and the idea of combining two such different instruments certainly sounds intriguing.

Those of you who have been reading my articles for some time know that I'm a big fan of the open position chord. This is where both hands play a chord together. It's a great technique that allows beginners (and pros) sound good at the piano right away. But, it's just one method or way to approach chord piano playing.

Another method I use is something called the crossover technique or arpeggio. Here the left hand plays a cascade of notes ascending or descending (usually ascending) while the right hand plays melody. This technique is especially suited for New Age piano playing because we can get a gentle flow of notes in the left hand. In fact, you can use over 2 octaves just in the left hand. This covers a lot of musical space so to speak and creates a lovely backdrop over which melodies may be composed or improvised.

For example, in the upcoming lesson, "Winter Sky," we have a 16-bar phrase in the Key of B flat. The chords are all charted out for you and you can hear me playing the left-hand crossover pattern. This pattern uses much of the left hand right away. The right-hand plays octave melody notes and the whole piece is finished in a few minutes.

Usually, when we use the open position chord, we skip the third in the left hand. In this lesson, we use the third to create a denser sound. And it works out well! You see, when you block out or chart the chords using the crossover technique, you create a harmonic background, a canvas of sound over which you paint in your foreground using melody instead of paint! A unique, but very helpful way of seeing how an improvisation or composition can be structured!

Multiples

Keith Fullerton Whitman recorded Multiples at the Harvard University studios where he had access to vintage synthesizers and electronics. The eight tracks on this album flow from piercing electronic tones to interlocking clusters of repetitive guitars.
Customer Review: No diggity
I can appreciate how Whitman went to harvard and dicked around with their instrument archive more than I have to like it. Don't get me wrong, I am a massive fan of the ambient-drone-classical-noise genre a la Stars of the Lid, Jessica Rylan, david lee myers and ellen band, home made electronics, bending circuits, all that geeky know all that Keith Whitman embraces. But frankly I find his music unbearable. Which is a shame because he's probably still riding on that glowing but unknowing review @ pitchfork which has made him a demigod in many peoples eyes [oh my GOD, what thought provoking and intelligent titles 'Stereo Music For Acoustic Guitar, Buchla Music Box 100, Hewlett Packard Model 236 Oscillator, Electric Guitar And Computer (Part One) ' the kind of titles that have tried so hard to erase so much pretense that it loops back around and you want to shoot yourself). Quite like the 'music itself'. I can imagine the guy at pitchfork, puffing at a pipe, Wittgenstein on hand, truly pretending to 'get' Stereo Music for Hi Hat. Some people say something this audacious is genius, I say something/one this audacious is scary because he could almost pass for a musician, if you forget that the first half of his career was built drilling drum-and-bass computer programming in your brain via the Hrvatski cell tower. Whitman is NOT a musician. He has no control over the often interesting sounds he produces from obscre machinery, the moment he begins to bring it together with 'stereo music for farfisa compact duo deluxe', he loses it all over again. What starts with a promising organ line and simple but satisfying drum pattern spirals into another useless mess of drone drone and drone. its as if his random clicking and chirping is a safety net for lack of compositional skills-- I would appreciate the dronage more if he had proven himself through some other avenue as a musician first, not just academically but intuitively.
Customer Review: Very original and creative electronic-influenced ambient classical music - non-fans of the genre will hate it, though
I bought this album only because it was on pitchforkmedia's top 50 albums of 2005 list. What makes it great is the fact that it sounds entirely original and inspired as it's very interesting to listen to. Unfortunately, I fear that non-fans of the genre will simply hate it. It took me several listens to get used to it, as a lot of the songs are pretty hard to listen to on the first try. As for what it sounds like, it's essentially electronic-influenced ambient classical music. He uses a fair amount of guitar and piano sounds here, and a LOT of electronic noises (I know this because the song titles say what he uses). I hated it the first time I listened to it, but after several listens I finally found its greatness. For those looking for some great contemporary classical ambient albums, this is a GREAT buy. Highly recommended! Highlights include: the entire album!

A guitar has a long neck, the fret board, up which runt eh strings. It is this long board which is used by the secondary hand to press the strings down in an arrangement which will create the chord to be played. Typically most guitars are made of wood, and so this fret board is a long, slender wooden board. Not only that, but the fret board is under a great deal of pressure, since the strings are pulled very tightly indeed. In fact, on many guitars the strings are made from steel, and tightened quite considerably, putting the fret board under a great deal of pressure. Wood is a natural product, obviously, and so therefore prone to the same problems that all natural products suffer from, and that is aging and deterioration.

If you talk to a guitar enthusiast it may well be that they have heard of truss rods, and may even be capable of showing you where their truss rod is to be found, but to the average person or beginner, most people would be hard pressed to know whether their guitar even had a truss rod. So what is this feature, and what does it do? First of all, if we think about the problem that may be caused by not having a truss rod, then we can see where its role fits in.

Those truss rods that allow movement in both directions are known as double truss systems. In some cases the truss rod can only be accessed by completely removing the headstock of the guitar, which is the part at the very top of the fret board, and so altering the style of the guitar is something done only very rarely.

This metal rod acts a little like a backbone for the fret board, meaning that aging, humidity and any other causes of natural deterioration will not result in warping or disfigurement of the fret board, helping to ensure that the notes still sound clear and accurate, and the life of the guitar is lengthened. Most classical guitars only use nylon strings, and so there is far less pressure on the fret board. For this reason, you may not always find truss rods included, but where you do find them, they can sometimes come with an extra feature which allows an alteration in the tone of the notes played to be heard. By adjusting the truss rod by turning it either clockwise or antic clockwise, the fret board can be adjusted to an angle either side of the normal centre. This can adjust the distance of the strings from the fret board, allowing a different playing method to be adopted, as well as altering the tone very slightly.

Certainly guitars, as with most wooden products, are treated carefully with sealants and varnishes to help nourish and protect the guitar for a good long life. However, with most wooden products the problem of slight warping may only lend character, for a guitar, and warping spells disaster, since the design and measurements of a guitar are very exact, to ensure that the notes are crisp, clear and accurate. Because of the length of the fret board, any warping or bending could cause the notes played to be altered quite noticeably, and so these would render the guitar useless. Not only that, but slight warping can lead to cracking, and with so much pressure on the fret board already from the strings, this would lead inevitably to breakage of the fret board completely. The truss rod, therefore, is a strong metal rod which runs up through the fret board from one end to the other, and can be tightened usually using an Allan key at the top.

In 1969 rumors started to spread that Paul was dead. Rumors of the death were exaggerated. No one knows for sure where the "Paul is Dead" rumor began. Some rumors were spread that Paul had been dead for three years and that he had been replaced by a look a like. Beatles fans everywhere looked for clues that were left intentionally in lyrics, record covers and pictures that would reveal the truth about the hoax.

Many visual clues were on the Abbey Road LP. The media began reporting the joke as a fact as soon as it was released. The rumors began to grow larger. In October of 1969 McCartney himself made a public appearance in which he stated the breaking up of The Beatles. In a 1970 Rolling Stone interview with John Lennon, Lennon was asked if any of the hidden clues were supposed to have any meaning. Lennon replied, "No. That was bull. The whole thing was made up."

The Beatles enjoyed attention. They were jokers; maybe they were just having a little fun with their fans. Some people today still believe that Paul is dead because of the many convincing clues. No evidence shows that any of the members were behind the hoax. No one can prove that it did or didnt happen. The fact of the matter is that Paul is alive today. He is currently married to an ex-model. He is touring the concert world. And he is still a Living legend.

James Paul McCartney was born on June 18, 1942 in Liverpool. He was the first son of Mary and James McCartney. His brother, Peter Michael McCartney, was born eighteen months later. Paul's mother was a midwife, who died from breast cancer in 1955 when Paul was just 14, this troubled Paul deeply. Paul's father was a cotton salesman during the day for A. Hannay Co., and a jazz musician with Jim Mac's Jazz Band at night. Paul did very well in school. He passed his 11-Plus examination in 1957 and entered the Liverpool Institute, a very popular high school. There, he met a younger student by the name of George Harrison whom Paul later brought with him into John's group, The Quarrymen. As a child, Paul showed no particular interest in music. Both he and his brother were sent to piano lessons, but these didn't last long. Then he was given a trumpet by an uncle, and he began to teach himself. His musical talent probably came from his father. Of all The Beatles, Paul's family was the only one with any musical background or interest. At the Liverpool Institute, Paul became popular. His dealings with young girls, however, had little effect on his grades. He was a top student, but he soon found that school was interfering with his social life. Like John and the others, Paul was influenced by early rock songs. Still, it was Elvis that formed the greatest impression on him. Paul first met John through a mutual friend, Ivan Vaughan. Vaughan invited Paul to see The Quarrymen play at the Wooton Parish. c The Quarrymen, and Paul accepted. Paul's first public performance with The Quarrymen was at a dance at the Conservative Club in Broadway. Paul was supposed to play a solo that night, but for some reason, he never did. What he did do after the dance was play John some songs that he had written himself. John was impressed and later tried to write songs of his own. Neither wrote anything of much value, but the two began collaborating, each egging the other on to better works. From that day until the end of The Beatles, they never stopped, and together they became "Lennon & McCartney," one of the most renowned song writing duos of the twentieth century. Once they had become established songwriters, Paul and John would often write independently of one another. John's songs were more raw rock 'n' roll, while Paul's tended to be more romantic. Songs like "Yesterday," "Michelle," and "Lovely Rita" are typical McCartney songs. An early agreement between Paul and John assured that all Beatle songs that either wrote would bear the trademark of "Lennon & McCartney." Paul met Jane Asher at a pop concert at Albert Hall. She was then seventeen. The Radio Times asked her to go along to the concert to give her impressions of The Beatles. After the concert, she was invited back to their hotel for a drink. That night Paul and Jane spent the evening together. "I realized she was the girl for me," Paul once said. Jane, however, summed up her impression of the boys by exclaiming, "They couldn't believe I was a virgin. " Paul wanted Jane to give up acting to be with him constantly. She refused. This led to a number of arguments, but Paul was still attracted to her. It was for Jane Asher that he wrote "I'm Looking Through You" and "And I Love Her." Marriage seemed inevitable, and on Christmas Day, 1967, Paul asked Jane to be his wife. She accepted (Bio..)(Paul Mc)

According to one myth. Paul left the recording studio in anger, following a fight with the rest of the group. Paul stormed out of the studio, jumped into his car and sped off (I Buried P). All of the clues point to a car accident that reportedly happened prior to Paul leaving the studio in anger. On November 10, 1966 a British newspaper reported that on Wednesday morning at five oclock someone was involved in a car accident, according to the newspaper the accident was so bad that the body could not be identified in any way. In A Day In The Life, John Lennon sings, "he blew his mind out in a car, he didnt notice that the light had changed, a crowd of people stood and stared, theyd seen his face before, nobody was really sure if he was from the house of god (in the song god sounds like Paul)(I Buried P)

The idea that Paul McCartney was dead for three years surfaced during the release of Abbey Road in September of 1969. The first indications of the hoax were printed in two Midwestern College newspapers (Iowas Drake University Times-Delphic and Northern Illinois Universitys Northern Star). Russel Gibb, a Detroit radio jock for WKNR FM read about the story in the college newspaper articles and invented new "clues" for listeners. Listeners called the radio station and claimed to be able to hear secret messages by playing Revolution #9 and other songs backwards. A walrus is a Greek symbol for death. In the song Glass Onion, John Lennon sings, "well heres another clues for you all, the walrus is Paul," which connected Paul to his "death".

Epiphone continued to grow and wanted even more of the market share. In 1935, Epiphone introduced the Electar Series to compete with Rickenbacker's electric guitars. By the time 1937 arrived, Epiphone's sales had doubled. The rest of the 30's continued with Epiphone and Gibson competing against each other and both companies introduced similar types of Hawaiian guitars.

In 2008, the Epiphone guitar is still going strong and more popular than ever. Included in their recent line up is of course the great Les Paul guitars and also signature guitars from some of the greatest guitarists ever. Some of the artists immortalized with these guitars are John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Slash, BB King, Tony Iommi, Zakk Wylde and Nikki Sixx.

Around this time, Epiphone was one of the top guitars in the world and some of the best musicians in the world were playing them. In fact Epi would open up his display cases on Saturday afternoons and let these famous musicians play the guitars.

A man by the name of Anastasios Stathopoulo began making his first musical instruments in 1873. In 1877, Anastasios and his family moved to Turkey to start a new life. By 1890 he had opened a factory, which made violins, mandolins, lutes and traditional Greek lioutos. In 1893, Anastasios' wife Marianthe, gave birth to their first child Epimanondas. By 1903, the Stathopoulo family was on the move once again. This time they moved overseas to the U.S. in a lower Manhattan neighborhood of New York

By 1983, production costs kept going up so Epiphone moved to Korea. Around this time, David Berryman, Henry Juszkiewicz and Gary Zebrowski purchased Gibson. Although Gibson was their main priority, Juszkiewicz saw potential in Epiphone and soon went out to Korea to figure out what to do. Soon the Epiphone guitar was selling well again.

In 1943, Epi passed away and left his brothers Orphie and Frixo to run the business. With Orphie looking after the financial part and Frixo looking after the mechanical part, Epiphone continued to compete with Gibson and things looked to be running smoothly. By 1948 this would be different. Orphie and Frixo weren't getting along and Frixo sold his share of the business to Orphie. The company continued to go downhill and in 1953, to solve a problem of a strike by the workers in Manhattan, the factory was moved to Philadelphia. Many of the company's talented craftsmen decided not to go to Philly and the result was a decline in the quality of their products.

The size war didn't stop there because in 1936 Epiphone produced wider versions of their Broadway, De Luxe and Triumph models by a whole inch to make them 3/8" wider than the Gibson's.

With the success of Epiphone's Recording Series banjos, Epiphone bought out the Favoran banjo company in 1925, to keep up with the demand. The sales of these banjos were so great and Epiphone's name was known so much for them, Epi changed the name of the company to the Epiphone Banjo Company in 1928.

Finally in 1928, Epi introduced a Recording line of guitars, mostly made of carved tops and a combination of spruce and laminated maple. The following year was the stock market crash of 1929 and the banjos that once sold so well were now rapidly going downhill. Epi decided that the company should focus more on selling its guitars and the Gibson Company was their main competitor.

In 1964, The Beatles discovered Epiphone guitars and John, Paul and George bought some of the Casino models. By 1965, Epiphone guitars were selling very well again, accounting for 20% of the total units shipped from their Kalamazoo factory. Epiphone was once again one of the top names in guitars.

The problems kept on getting worse in the 50's while the Gibson Company were getting stronger. Orphie called Gibson's general manager Ted McCarty and asked him if he would like to buy the Epiphone bass business for $20,000. McCarty agreed and Epiphone was taken over by Gibson in 1957. Initially Gibson had planned just to take control of the upright bass business but ended up revamping the whole Epiphone Company. In 1958, Gibson released a whole new line of acoustic and electric guitars and moved the production of these instruments to their own factory in Kalamazoo Michigan.

In 1917, Epi changed the name of the company to the House Of Stathopoulo and began to change the product line as well. The mandolins that they were making weren't as popular as they once were, so Epi concentrated on an instrument that was... banjos. He also got his first ever patent for banjo construction at this time.

The competition between Epiphone and Gibson in the 30's was very intense. In 1934 Gibson increased the body width of one of their existing models to compete directly with the Epiphone Masterbuilt guitar. The next year Epiphone returned the favor by releasing their Emperor model, which had an even wider body. They also created quite the buzz by advertising the new Emperor with posters of a half naked model playing the guitar.

This would continue until the end of the 60's, when foreign guitar companies started to produce cheaper models that were often very similar to the American designs. This cut into the sales of the Epiphone and Gibson guitars and the company decided to give the Gibson line more attention. This then led to moving the production of the Epiphone's to Japan in 1970.

In New York, Anastasios bought a place where he made and sold his instruments on the ground floor while his family lived on the floor above. Business was great for him at that time because it was at the height of the mandolin craze. Anastasios began marking his instruments with an "A. Stathopoulo, manufacturer-repairer of all kinds of musical instruments" and built his company a warehouse.

The Epiphone guitar officially got its name for the first time when it was registered in 1924. The actual company got its start many years earlier, so let's go back a bit further to see how it began.

In 2002, Gibson luthier Mike Voltz is moved over to Epiphone to take care of their acoustic guitar production and marketing. Voltz ended up reviving their acoustics with the new range of Masterbilt guitars. The demand for Epiphone guitars grew so much that in 2003 they opened a factory in China strictly for Epiphone. In 2005, Epiphone reintroduced Paul McCartney's 1964 USA Texan guitar.

The 90's ended up being a huge decade for Epiphone. They began to make almost every style of guitar at a decent price. They also opened up Epiphone's own office separate from Gibson, to provide a better relationship with their products and workers instead of the long distance communication they had in the past. The 90's also was the release of Signature models for Noel Gallagher, John Lennon and John Lee Hooker.

History Of The Epiphone Guitar

In 1915, Anastasios Stathopoulo died, leaving his son Epimanondas in charge. Epimanondas, whose nickname was Epi, was 22 years old when he took over the business. Epi turned out to be a great luthier and businessman.
